University of Michigan report: Most double mastectomies unnecessary

ANN ARBOR (WKZO) -- Many women who get a double mastectomy after a breast cancer diagnosis do not need both breasts surgically removed.

Researchers at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center say around 70-percent of the women who have cancer diagnosed in one breast decide to have both breasts removed. However, their research indicates 90-percent of women with cancer in one breast do not go on to develop cancer in their other breast.

The researchers say their study shows that breast cancer patients may be receiving "overtreatment" by opting to remove a healthy breast out of fear rather than need.
