Dr. John 's music is the embodiment of the sound of New Orleans, a gumbo of blues, jazz, funk, R&B, rock and zydeco.  The legendary musician also known as Mac Rebennack will be paid tribute in his hometown with an all-star concert at the Big Easy's historic Saenger Theatre on May 5, a day after the finale of the 2014 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.

The show, dubbed "The Musical Mojo of Dr. John: A Celebration of Mac & His Music," will include performances by Gregg Allman , Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann , Rolling Stones touring keyboardist Chuck Leavell , Mavis Staples , Jimmie Vaughan and such local luminaries as Allen Toussaint , Irma Thomas and Cyril Neville .  Dr. John will be joining the other musicians throughout the concert, which also will feature a number of as-yet-unannounced special guests.

Acclaimed producer Don Was will serve as the evening's musical director.  "Dr. John transcends genres with a truly distinctive sound that embodies the rich musical heritage of New Orleans and has tremendously influenced the course of music history," Was says in a statement.

Tickets for the concert will go on sale to the general public this Monday at 10 a.m. CT at the Saenger Theatre box office and online at SaengerNOLA.com and Ticketmaster.com.  Some of the proceeds from the event will benefit the New Orleans Musicians Clinic.  The show also will be recorded for future release via a variety of platforms.
