Clerk: Schuette ordered counties not to issue same-sex marriage licenses

DETROIT (WKZO) -- Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette told all county clerks in the state last fall not to issue marriage licenses to gay couples regardless of a federal court decision. That was revealed by Oakland County Clerk Lisa Brown as she testified Monday afternoon in the federal trial over Michigan’s ban on same-sex marriage.

Brown said Schuette issued the edict on October 16th as Federal Judge Bernard Friedman was considering the lawsuit over the state’s same-sex marriage ban that has since turned into the trial. She testified that she would have followed Friedman’s order, had he given one, and not Schuette’s order.
