Lawmakers leave Lansing without a road repair funding bill

LANSING, MI (WTVB) - There will be no funding solutions for repairs to Michigan's roads until after the Legislature's summer recess.  Lawmakers ended a week of impasse yesterday by failing to agree on how to raise more than one-billion-dollars for fixes to streets with potholes and crumbling highways.  Increases to the sales tax and the state's gas tax were defeated in state Senate votes the last two days.

Democrats blamed the Republican super majority for the collapse of a deal to reduce homestead property taxes while increasing the gas tax. Several polls have shown that roads are the number one issue on the minds of voters this election year.

Governor Snyder told reporters last evening that he remains relentlessly positive they will get something done, perhaps when the atmosphere isn’t so politically charged.
