GRAND RAPIDS (WKZO) -- Union officials representing prison workers in Michigan are blaming budget cuts and privatization of services in state prisons for contributing to the escape of a convicted killer in Ionia.  Michael Elliot was caught nearly 24-hours after breaking free while wearing a white prison kitchen worker's uniform.

During a reelection campaign stop in Grand Rapids Monday, Governor Snyder downplayed the allegations from the unions and promised a full investigation into the escape.  He added he does not believe privatizing the kitchen staffs at prisons played a role in Elliot's escape.
