Protests outside courtroom as U.S. Appeals Court takes up Michigan's same sex marriage ban

CINCINNATI, OH (WTVB) - Michigan’s ban on same sex marriage is just one of six cases from four states that are getting a federal court hearing in Cincinnati. The three judge panel started Wednesday by grilling attorneys representing the Attorney General’s office on one side, and April Deboer and Jane Rowse, two gay women from Michigan who just want to be able to adopt each other’s children.

Assistant Attorney General Aaron Lindstrom says the people voted in the ban. But attorney Dana Nessel argued for the plaintiffs for equality under the law. Whatever the judges ultimately rule, and it may be sometime before that ruling is issued, the cases seems headed for the U.S. Supreme Court.

Hundreds demonstrated on both sides of the issue outside the court house in Ohio.
