Rubin "Hurricane" Carter , a boxer who inspired a Bob Dylan song and a movie starring Denzel Washington , has died following a battle with prostate cancer.

Carter's friend, John Artis , says the boxer died in his sleep Sunday morning in Toronto, according to CTV News . He was 76.

Carter spent 19 years in prison on a murder conviction that was overturned after several appeals and a groundswell of support by civil rights groups and celebrities. He was released in 1985.

In 1975, Dylan released a song about Carter's case, titled "Hurricane." Washington portrayed Carter in the 1999 film The Hurricane , earning him an Oscar nomination.
