Michigan lawmakers looking to require drug tests and community service for welfare receipients

LANSING, MI (WTVB) - Bills that would require drug tests and community service for those on welfare in Michigan were approved by the state Senate and a House committee yesterday.  The bills would deny unemployment benefits to people who refused to take drug tests required by employers and would mandate community service for those receiving public assistance.

The drug-testing bill passed the House Commerce Committee by a vote of 12-4 and the community service bill passed the Senate by a vote of 27-9.  Republicans called the bills common sense, however Democrats claim low-income people are being targeted for political purposes by the GOP.
