David Bowie has long been considered one of the most innovative and creative rock stars, and he's always applied his keen artistic sense to the outfits he wears.  Now, the 65-year-old singer has been voted the best-dressed Briton of all time in a poll launched by BBC History Magazine .

Bowie faced off against nine other British luminaries, who were chosen by a group of art, history and fashion experts based on how much they've influenced history of fashion in the country.  Bowie easily led all candidates , garnering a whopping 48.5 percent of the votes cast.

To be fair, Bowie was the only contemporary figure nominated, with the next youngest being Anne Messel , 6th Countess of Rosse, who died in 1992 at age 90.

The top three vote-getters after Bowie were Queen Elizabeth I with 13.6 percent; Georgiana Cavendish , Duchess of Devonshire, with 9.5 percent; and famed dandy Beau Brummell with 8.4 percent.

Bowie was nominated for inclusion in the poll by designer Wayne Hemingway , who noted, "Here was a creative genius who understood art and design, looked cool, inspired us and upset the establishment.  All these attributes lead to things that drive humankind forward…change."

Other figures picked to take part in the poll included King Henry III , 17th-century diarist Samuel Pepys and 18th-century politician Charles James Fox .
