Sen. Carl Levin opens a nomination hearing on Capitol Hill
Sen. Carl Levin opens a nomination hearing on Capitol Hill

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WKZO) -- U.S. Senator Carl Levin is pleading with his colleagues on Capitol Hill to end the partial federal government shutdown and raise the debt ceiling to avoid default.

The Detroit Democrat took to the floor of the Senate during a rare Sunday session to try to jumpstart negotiations between the House and Senate.  Levin said there are "real hardships being imposed" on people due to the shutdown, citing problems with nutrition assistance for women and children, Head Start programs and research grants being stalled at the National Science Foundation.

This week marks the third week of the shutdown.
