Due to Russia's anti-gay laws, some gay celebrities have stated that they won't perform in or travel to that country.  Elton John , however, has announced that he'll go on with his previously scheduled Russian shows in December -- and now a Russian Muslim cleric is warning fans that, essentially, they'll burn in hell if they attend.

According to the European news agency AFP , the imam of a mosque in Kazan, Russia -- one of the cities where John is scheduled to play -- was quoted as saying, "The only thing we can do as believers is to call the people not to give into the temptations of the devil and not attend Elton John's Russian concerts."

The religious leader added, "Divine retribution for taking part in a hotbed of sodomy will fall both on those who attend the concert and those who perform there."  The same cleric also posted a message on his mosque's website calling Elton "the devil's work."

Two other groups in Russia have called for John's concert to be banned: a conservative parents group and an anti-gay group.

Russian's anti-gay laws specifically prohibit the dissemination of "gay propaganda" to minors, but opponents have argued that the law is so vague that it could apply to any public event, especially one where someone speaks out about gay rights, as both Madonna and Lady Gaga did at their most recent concerts in Russia.
