Michigan joins Federal government in meningitis outbreak investigation

DETROIT (WKZO) -- The State of Michigan will team up with federal officials to investigate the outbreak of fungal meningitis that killed 19 residents.  Michigan reported 264 cases that have been linked to tainted steroids produced at the New England Compounding Center in Massachusetts.

Attorney General Bill Schuette was joined by the U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts Carmen Otiz in announcing the joint effort.  Otiz said through a coordinated effort, investigators will be able to achieve justice for the 751 victims who died and their families.

The last person in Michigan to pass away from the suspected tainted drugs was a 64-year-old Livingston County woman in July.
