Michigan lawmakers consider charity gambling measures

LANSING (WKZO) -- State officials spoke to hundreds of residents who gathered in Lansing Friday to discuss changes to the state's rules governing charitable gaming.

Michigan law allows group to run poker halls to raise money for charities.  Lawyer Don McGee with the Michigan Attorney General's Office told the gathering that charity gaming has grown into a multi-million dollar business where fraud and corruption is possible.

Opponents to the changes say the rules will heavily damage fund-raising efforts for a number of organizations.  State officials say charity gambling has grown from 7.9-million dollars in 2004 to 197-million dollars in 2011.
