Benefits cut for Michigan food stamp recipients

LANSING (WKZO) -- Nearly 1.8-million Michigan food stamp recipients will find reductions in their benefits starting Friday.  The cuts, which will average about 36-dollars a month for a family of four, come as a temporary raise for food stamps approved by Congress in 2009 has now expired.

More reductions in the benefits may be on the way, as Congress continues to debate a farm bill, which sets funding for food stamps.  The Republican-controlled U.S. House has approved a version of the bill which cuts about 40-billion dollars from nutrition assistance over the next ten years, while a bill that passed in the Democratic-controlled Senate will reduce benefits by four-billion dollars over the next decade.
