Representative McCann to introduce child neglect legislation

KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- A local lawmaker is introducing a bill that seeks to expand penalties for child neglect in Michigan.

Democratic Representative Sean McCann of Kalamazoo has legislation that would set new penalties for those neglecting a child in their care should the child suffer harm as a result of that neglect.  It comes in light of the tragedy at Interfaith Homes apartments in March when three children perished in a fire when they were left unsupervised.

Under current law, a child six-years-old or younger left unattended who suffers injury or death can result in a prison sentence of up to 15 years and a fine of up to ten-thousand dollars for the adult meant to be in charge of their welfare.  McCann is introducing the bill after learning that the law does not cover children left alone at home.
