VIDEO: 26-year-old diagnosed with cancer, to shave head in prep for Kalamazoo Marathon 5k

KALAMAZOO (WKZO) – For those participating in the 2013 Kalamazoo Marathon, the inspiration for crossing the finish line can come from any number of places. For 26-year old Jayni Angeli, battling cancer has motivated her to take matters into her own hands.

On March 4, 2013 Angeli was diagnosed with nodular lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin lymphoma which is a cancer of the lymph nodes that affects young people. Since the day of her diagnosis, Angeli has been determined to combat the disease in every way possible. A key component to the fight has been regular exercise. She has received two chemotherapy treatments, and says running has kept her energy level up.

“I definitely feel the difference in my energy level when I get out and run and when I don’t,” Angeli said.

Another side effect of the chemotherapy treatment is hair loss, and Angeli is taking that in stride as well. Along with many of her friends and co-workers, Jayni will shave her head on Wednesday night at The Library Taphouse and Kitchen at 9 pm.

“I’ve noticed that my hair is starting to fall out, so instead of getting down about it I decided to take things into my own hands,” said Angeli.

A month after her diagnosis, Jayni Angeli will run in the 5k event of the Kalamazoo Marathon on May 5th.

Jayni’s is documenting her journey with battling cancer on her YouTube. Watch above her fist video installment of the series. More are available at her channel here
