Mavis Staples has just released a new studio effort titled One True Vine . The album marks the gospel/soul legend's second collaboration with Jeff Tweedy of the acclaimed alt-country/modern-rock group Wilco .
One True Vine features a few songs penned by Tweedy, plus covers of Funkadelic 's "Can You Get to That" and Nick Lowe 's "Far Celestial Shore," as well as a new rendition of "I Like the Things About Me," a song co-written by Mavis' late father, Pops Staples , that she used to perform with their family group The Staple Singers . Tweedy played almost all of the instruments on the album except for the drums, which were played by his 17-year-old son, Spencer .
Staples will celebrate the arrival of One True Vine with a special concert tonight at The Fonda theater in Los Angeles. She also has a two-night engagement this Friday and Saturday at the Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden, New Jersey.
