WASHINGTON (WKZO) -- The City of Detroit probably would not have received funding for the M-1 light-rail project if Kwame Kilpatrick had still been in office.  In a recent interview, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said that he would not have agreed to provide millions of dollars for the light-rail project or other transit projects if Kilpatrick had still been mayor.

LaHood said Detroit has been a priority during his tenure and praised Michigan lawmakers for approving a regional transit authority and for pushing for construction of a new bridge to Canada.  LaHood also praised Detroit Mayor Dave Bing, saying he was key to federal involvement in major transportation projects in Metro Detroit.

LaHood will step down this week after heading the Transportation Department for the last four-and-a-half-years.
