Governor Snyder signs driverless car measure into law

LANSING (WKZO) -- Driverless cars are now legally allowed on Michigan roads.

Governor Rick Snyder has signed into law bills that will allow the testing of automated motor vehicles in the state. Citing Michigan's long history tied to the automotive industry, Snyder says getting in early on research and development of vehicles of the future is key to ensuring the state remains a major player in the industry.

A human will still be required to be behind the wheel of a driverless car while it's being tested. Another measure protects manufacturers from civil liability for damages caused by modified autonomous vehicles unless a defect was already present in the vehicle when it was originally manufactured.
