IRS rules on same sex married couples' status in Michigan

LANSING (WKZO) -- While Michigan does not recognize same-sex marriages, the Internal Revenue Service will allow couples married in other states to enjoy federal tax benefits.  The ruling by the Treasury Department affects all states, with Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew issuing a statement saying it gives "clear, coherent tax filing guidance for all legally married same sex couples nationwide."  The Michigan ACLU added the state still treats gay couples as "virtual strangers," adding there is a "ways to go" in the state.
