Boy buried in sand dune makes full recovery

MICHIGAN CITY, IN (WTVB) - A good news update on a story we brought you earlier this summer. You might remember the name Nathan Woessner. He began first grade this week but the 6-year-old almost didn’t make it. Early last month, as he was climbing Mt. Baldy, a sand dune at the Indiana State Dunes in Michigan City,  he got sucked into a sink-hole, an air-pocket that had formed at the base of the dune.

Indiana Governor Mike Pence says 139 police, fire-fighters and private contractors using their hands, shovels and heavy equipment kept digging for 3 hours until they found him, still alive, under 11 feet of sand. They were all honored yesterday, and got a big thank-you from his parents.

The boy spent 3 weeks in intensive care while sand was removed from his lungs. Except for the occasional cough, he has made a full recovery.  Geologists say the sink hole remains a mystery, but they have found another one near the spot of the first one.
