COVERT, MI (WTVB) - Quite a scare in an ultra light plane crash early Friday afternoon in Southwest Michigan. A teenager was on board along with the 42-year old pilot from Cassopolis. They both survived after the plane went down on the beach along Lake Michigan near Covert. 15-year-old Dillen Smith of South Bend told WSBT-TV that he was on board when one of the wings collapsed and the large two-seat hang-glider with a motor plummeted about 100 feet to the sand below.  Smith suffered a few broken ribs and a concussion and was treated and released.

The plane is registered to 42-year old Timothy Feathers, who suffered two broken legs and a couple of broken vertebrae and was admitted at Bronson Methodist.  His condition isn’t being released.

Meanwhile, a man in his 40’s from Lansing was airlifted to Spectrum Butterworth after a skydiving accident at Hastings City Airport. Witnesses told Michigan State Police that the man’s chute failed to fully deploy. They say he was falling fast and spinning out of control when he hit the ground about 6 pm Friday evening in the back yard of a home near the airport.   He was loaded on an Aeromed chopper and airlifted to Grand Rapids.   His name and condition have not been released.
