SOUTH HAVEN, MI (WTVB) - Plans for vacation or maybe just a one day getaway can sometimes be at the mercy of the elements. There's still no swimming allowed at South Beach in South Haven. E. coli levels in Lake Michigan at that beach remain elevated above the standards for full body contact. The Van Buren County Health Department took the latest samples on Tuesday, and will test the water again on Thursday.Allegan County Health officials have also closed the beach at Pier Cove because of elevated E. Coli levels.
The beaches are still safe for walking, sunbathing and other activities, but health officials are telling people to stay out of the water for the next few days. Yesterday it wasn’t safe to go into the water anywhere along the Lake Michigan Shore as windy conditions produced big waves and dangerous riptides.
