Playbill.com reports that Tony-nominated actress Jessie Mueller , whose previous credits include Broadway productions of On a Clear Day You Can See Forever , Nice Work If You Can Get It and The Mystery of Edwin Drood , will take on the lead role.
A rep for Beautiful tells Playbill.com that Mueller is taking piano lessons in preparation for portraying King. The cast also will feature actors portraying such notables King's ex-husband and songwriting partner Gerry Goffin , the fellow Brill Building songwriting team of Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil and music mogul Don Kirshner .
Beautiful: The Carole King Musical will have a debut preview run at San Francisco's Curran Theatre from September 24 through October 20, and then will begin previews on Broadway at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on November 21. The show is officially scheduled to open on January 12, 2014.
Beautiful will feature a score that includes many classic hits King wrote with Goffin, Mann and Weil. The production will follow Carole's life from her rise to fame as a teenage songwriter through the disintegration of her marriage and her personal struggles during the mid and late 1960s and on to her later success as a solo artist.
