Michigan marijuana decriminalization bill introduced

LANSING (WKZO) -- State Representative Jeff Irwin of Ann Arbor has bipartisan backing for his effort to decriminalize possession of marijuana in Michigan.

The Democrat unveiled his bill, with Republicans Mike Shirkey and Mike Callton signing on as co-sponsors.  Ann Arbor enacted a policy years ago to write tickets for pot possession rather than make arrests, while Grand Rapids is struggling with the issue.  Irwin says the state spends over 325-million dollars a year to battle marijuana, but says law enforcement is losing the battle.

A recent YouGov poll found that 51-percent of voting age Americans say marijuana should be legalized, taxed, and regulated like alcohol, while 33-percent were against the idea.
