Brewers Edge Cubs

by

Ryan Braun’s three-run homer in the first was the big blow as Milwaukee edged the Chicago Cubs 5-4 Friday night. The Brewers scored four times in that first inning off hard-throwing right-hander Jeff Samardzja. He took the loss. Rookie Jean Segura was in the middle of a bizarre play in the eighth when he singled and stole second. After Braun walked, Segura tried to steal third, but stopped and headed back to second when the throw was well ahead of him. Braun had advanced, so they both stood on the bag and were tagged by the shortstop. That meant Braun was out, but Segura didn’t realize that and started to trot off the field. He realized his mistake and scrambled over to first base safely. Shortly after, he took off for second and was thrown out, basically meaning he stolen second and was thrown out at second in the same inning. Marco Estrada picked up his second win for the Brewers with a quality start. Jim Henderson pitched a scoreless ninth for the save. Carlos Gomez added his second home run for Milwaukee. David DeJesus, Anthony Rizzo and Luis Valbuena had homers for the Cubs.
