Sam Moore, Steve Cropper Perform at Memphis Soul White House Event

It was all about soul at the White House Tuesday night. President Obama saluted Memphis Soul music as part of the In Performance at the White House series.

Among the artists who took the stage to perform soul classics: Sam Moore , Steve Cropper and Mavis Staples . Booker T. Jones served as music director and band leader.

Al Green was also scheduled to participate but was forced to cancel due to a back injury. Obama joked before the night's performances, "Tonight I am speaking not just as president but as one of America's best-known Al Green impersonators." He famously sang Green's "Let's Stay Together" during the presidential campaign last year.

PBS will air the event next Tuesday night; check local listings. Here's a rundown of some of the notable performances from the event:

-- Cyndi Lauper , the Otis Redding version of "Try a Little Tenderness"

-- All of the artists, Wilson Pickett 's "In The Midnight Hour"
