Detroit Electric launches first vehicle

DETROIT (WKZO) -- Detroit Electric has launched the first all-electric sports car.

The resurrected automaker debuted its first vehicle, the SP:01, at its new headquarters inside the Fisher Building this week.  The sports car will cost 135-thousand dollars and can go from zero-to-60-miles-per-hour in under four seconds.

The SP:01 is a rear-wheel drive car composed of an aluminum chassis, a carbon-composite body and has a four-speed manual transmission, with an optional twin-speed automatic gearbox.  Officials say the vehicle will get close to 180-miles on a single charge.

Deliveries of the vehicle are slated to begin in August.  Detroit Electric produced electric cars from 1907 to 1939 and the brand was revived in 2008.
