has penned a new memoir about his long and colorful career in the music business that's set to be published on April 16. As its title suggests,
Shell Shocked: My Life with the Turtles, Flo and Eddie, and Frank Zappa, etc.
delves into the many highlights of Kaylan's musical journey, on which he's been accompanied by his longtime singing partner
Kaylan and Volman first came to fame as members of legendary pop-rock group The Turtles, and after the band's initial breakup in 1970 the two singers joined Frank Zappa 's decidedly less poppy backing group The Mothers of Invention . Rechristened Flo and Eddie , Volman and Kaylan also began recording as a duo. The eventually became sought-after backing singers, lending their talents to an impressive list of famous artists, including John Lennon , Stephen Stills , Bruce Springsteen , T. Rex , Alice Cooper , Blondie and The Ramones . Today, Kaylan continues to tour with Volman in an updated version of The Turtles.
Shell Shocked was co-written with respected music journalist Jeff Tamarkin , and features a foreword by comic/magician Penn Jillette . You can check out an excerpt from the autobiography now at RollingStone.com.
Kaylan will celebrate the book's release with a special Q&A session on Tuesday at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles. The singer also will give a stripped-down performance at the event.
