PBS to air Journey singer's incredible, um, journey.

by Mark Cartwright

It's one thing to become step in and sing for a legendary band, but taking the place of Steve Perry is another thing.  It's not easy by any means.  Perry had a vocal range that few could touch, let alone impersonate night after night on tour.  Some have tried, only to have physical repercussions due to the vocal strain.   Arnel Pineda, on the other hand, seems the perfect fit.  PBS is going to air Don’t Stop Believin’: Everyman’s Journey, on September 30th.  Arnel, as you may or may not know by now, was discovered by Journey guitarist Neal Schon on a YouTube video clip, singing in a small club in the Philippines.  Arnel claims he doesn't try to compete with Steve Perry, he's just trying to "help out."  He has also mentioned that as a fan, he would even step aside if Perry were to rejoin.  I think it would be beneficial to have both of them back, kind of like when Boston had both Brad Delp, and Fran Cosmo on tour for a while.  Combine Perry's vocals, mixed with Arnel's vocals , and throw in the equally impressive vocals of drummer Deen Castronovo , and you would have a formidable trio!
