Nazareth singer McCafferty retires

by Mark Cartwright

Citing illness, Nazareth singer Dan McCafferty is retiring from the band Nazareth.  McCafferty suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, which makes it difficult for him to breathe.  The band posted a statement on their website.

“We sadly have to tell you all that Dan has been forced to retire due to ill health. It has gotten worse lately, and after trying to play a festival in Switzerland last weekend, Dan found it impossible to continue after performing only three songs. In the dressing room afterwards, he told the band that he couldn’t go on any longer.”

Is there a more unique and recognizable voice in rock and roll than Dan McCafferty?  His voice had more rasp than Rod Stewart, but more ease to it than AC\DC's Brian Johnson.  He could simply open his mouth and that amazing sound just seemed to fall out.  But on recordings, it sounded so powerful, you could imagine him raring back and screaming.  It's hard to imagine Nazareth continuing without the man who fronted the band for 45 years, but in rock and roll, you never know.
